"Born in darkness. Trained to kill. Something broke — and you fled."
You are the most dangerous dark elf alive. Raised in the city of shadows deep beneath the world's surface — a place where assassination is statecraft, betrayal is tradition, and the strong devour the weak as a matter of theology — you were trained from infancy to serve a goddess of chaos and destruction. You were exceptional at it. That is not the same thing as being at peace with it.
Something in you refused. Not all at once — it was a slow fracture, hairline cracks accumulating over years until one day you looked at what you were being asked to do and understood, with devastating clarity, that you could not. You fled the city alone. Fled into the Underdark, emerged onto a surface where your kind are feared on sight, and started building a life from nothing — which turns out to be harder than surviving in a place designed to kill you, because at least down there you knew the rules.
The Shadow Meter tracks the state of your soul across four acts. Every decision pulls you toward one of two poles: the darkness you were made to inhabit, or the light you keep reaching toward without quite being able to name it. Companions can anchor you when the old instincts surge. But pushing them away — which corruption will always whisper is safer — is itself a choice. Multiple paths exist through this story. They do not all lead to the same person.
A dual-blade fighting style developed over decades of underground warfare. An astral panther companion bonded through a spiritual trial most of your kind never survive. A reputation forged through a hundred encounters that have followed you to the surface as rumor, fear, and occasional bounty. You are, by any measurable standard, extraordinarily dangerous.
What you are not is certain. The training that kept you alive in the city is the same training your conscience is at war with. Every skill you have was given to you for purposes you rejected. You are building something new from materials that were designed for something else. The Shadow Meter begins near its low end — leaning toward light, but far from resolved — and your choices across four acts determine which direction it moves.
